DRY ONION SOUP MIX (with just the healthy stuff)!--The frugal farm girl's DIY ready-made mix series.

Ready-made mixes: Homemade goodness made simple, one jar at a time.

Dry onion soup mix is one of those can't-live-without convenience mixes you hate to give up when you switch to a healthy, no-processed food lifestyle. If you're like me, you rely heavily on onion soup mix when fixing tasty meals for your family. This mix is not only for soup! Onion soup mix can be used in scads of recipes, like pot roast, meatloaf, dips and roasted vegetables, just to name a few.

We homemakers love onion soup mix! Yet, one glance at the labels of the store-bought versions faces us with a serious dilemma. Commercially processed onion soup mix often contains ingredients such as MSG, caramel color, corn syrup, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, yeast extract, disodium inosinate, and the list goes on. Yuck!

So what are we to do? Like it or not, it's time to choose: Either keep using the store-bought versions because of their perceived convenience, OR...take matters in your own hands. Make your own! That's what many of us are doing. It isn't as hard as you may think to simply create your own healthy convenience mixes one jar at a time. That's why I'm bringing you these posts--to give you healthy recipes for making your own ready-made mixes, like onion soup mix.

Grab your apron and meet me in the kitchen! Today, I'll show you how to make your own healthy onion soup mix, and how to use it to make totally awesome roasted potatoes!

Dry Onion Soup Mix Recipe

INGREDIENTS
(Organic is best, of course!)

1 1/3 cups dried onion flakes
2 tablespoons dried parsley flakes
4 teaspoons onion powder
4 teaspoons turmeric
2 teaspoons celery salt
2 teaspoons sea salt
2 teaspoons sugar
1 teaspoon arrowroot
1 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

INSTRUCTIONS

Combine everything in a medium bowl and whisk together until thoroughly mixed. Store the mix in an air-tight pint-size jar in your pantry. To use, simply substitute 1/4 cup of your homemade mix anytime a recipe calls for a packet of onion soup mix. Easy peasy!

Don't forget your FREE PRINTABLE LABELS! Each mix post in this series comes with a link to a free downloadable page of 8 labels and instructions to attach to your homemade mixes. These labels are simple and easy to read, and done to look a bit retro (which I love) with their lettering and color scheme. You can print your labels onto white card-stock, cut them out, and use double-sided tape to stick them to your jars of mixes. Or, keep it super simple and print your labels onto this sticker paper by Avery. Just cut them out and stick them right to your jars. Enjoy!

Totally Awesome Roasted Potatoes Recipe...

These roasted potatoes are a delicious
side to any meal and very easy
to make!

You are gonna love these potatoes! For best results, use a cast iron skillet. Every farm girl should have a cast iron skillet in her kitchen. It's easy to clean, oven safe, and you'll love how well cast iron browns and gives food that extra good flavor!

INGREDIENTS
(Organic is best, of course!)

1 medium yellow onion, diced
5 red potatoes, cubed
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
1/4 cup onion soup mix
1 tablespoon olive oil
Cooking spray

INSTRUCTIONS

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a large cast iron skillet, saute the onions in the olive oil over medium-high heat until browned. Add in the red potatoes, parsley and onion soup mix. Spray with cooking spray and cook for about four minutes, stirring often, just until the potatoes are browned. At this point, the potatoes and dry onion flakes will still be firm. To finish cooking without burning, spray potatoes again with cooking spray, cover and place the skillet in the preheated oven. Cook for ten minutes. When done, you'll have some of the most amazing roasted potatoes you ever tasted!
