How to make DIY glass spray bottles for your homemade cleaners. (This is pure genius).

Do you make homemade cleaning solutions that contain essential oils?

Did you know that if you put solutions with essential oils in plastic bottles, you can end up contaminating your environment with harmful compounds (like what you're trying to eliminate by going green in the first place)?

That's right. As wonderful as essential oils are, they can also cause those plastic bottles to leach stuff you don't want right back into your cleaning solution--then into the air and onto the surfaces inside your home.

That's the bad news. The good news is there's a simple answer. Glass.

But glass spray bottles can be really expensive! I know. I did a search on-line for these. Know how much a 32 ounce glass spray bottle goes for? $15! I have news for you. You can save yourself all that money by looking no further than your own recycle bin! That's right. Look closely and you'll see: those $15 spray bottles look mysteriously like recycled vinegar bottles. Hmmmm...

If you don't have an empty vinegar bottle laying around, buy one. It's okay. You have to buy vinegar anyway for a lot of homemade cleaning solutions, don't you? A 32 ounce glass bottle of Heinz vinegar costs around $2. For that price, you'll get your vinegar and the glass spray bottle as a bonus!

How? It's simple.

Just remove the label, fill the bottle with your favorite DIY cleaner and screw on any old spray nozzle, new or used, it doesn't matter. (Just make sure it's clean first). And viola. You now have a free (well, nearly free) glass spray bottle worth $15. Now that's cool!

If you're like me, now that you know how to do this, you'll probably start noticing how many bottles are out there with the right size neck for putting spray nozzles onto. Tons. From Papa Bear size, to Mama Bear, to Baby Bear bottles. Make one for the house, the car, and for the bathroom. All you have to do is adjust the length of the little hose and you can fit a spray nozzle onto any size bottle you want, as long as the neck fits. You'll never have to buy another plastic spray bottle. Ever.

Now that's pure genius.

Want a fun way to label your cleaning products? Try these premium chalkboard labels. They'll stay put on you bottles and they come with a liquid chalk marker that's smudge proof, but easily erasable for re-labeling.

  3. This is great! I've been using the window spray on my tile floor and my floors have never looked so good! I just spray it down and then use a dry mop to wipe it down. Easy Peesy

  5. How are you avoiding leaching when the solution uptake is a plastic tube immersed in the essential oils?

  6. A good question. In answer, the amount of plastic in the uptake tube is much less than if the solution was being stored in a plastic bottle as well. Since leeching takes place over time, simply remove the nozzle from the bottle and replace it with the original cap for storage. When you're going to use the cleaner, put the nozzle on only for the cleaning session. In today's world, it's nearly impossible to avoid plastic completely, but by using glass bottles and limiting how long plastic comes into contact with your cleaner, you will be doing a lot to reduce exposure to these chemicals. Hope that helps.
