Strawberries--a little bit of self-reliance.

This morning my husband wished for strawberries. But the frugal farm girl in me piped up and said:

"Strawberries are too expensive, and I already spent this week's grocery money." (I know, what a party-pooper, right?)

Yet, a short time later, we were both pleasantly surprised to find our very own berry patch proudly offering us the first of the season's strawberries--enough to make a delicious strawberry basil salad!

Those bright little gems make my self-sufficient, farm-girl spirit take wing every time--especially when money is tight, yet we can have what we want, because we grew it ourselves! And the good news is, you don't have to live in the country to grow stuff you can eat. Anyone can grow a patch of berries, no matter where you live. All you need is a farm girl's heart--and maybe a patch of dirt.

Easy strawberry basil salad

Toss your favorite baby mixed salad greens with several sliced strawberries (you can do more greens, or more berries, it's up to you). Add in chopped fresh basil, and top with your favorite raspberry balsamic vinaigrette, and sesame seeds (optional). It's a cinch!

"Farm girl: it's a verb, because it's what you do."
